10 Feet Of Snow Strands 1,000 People In NW China

Around 1,000 people, mostly tourists, have been stranded in a holiday village in China's northwestern Xinjiang for going a week after avalanches towering 23 feet buried the area, state TV reported.

Road access to Hemu, a popular resort located near the borders of Kazakhstan, Russia and Mongolia, has been completely cut off by 10 consecutive days of heavy snow — a story repeated at locales across Xinjiang's Altay Prefecture.

The heavy snow, 10 feet in some parts, triggered dozens of avalanches along large sections of highways in the Altay mountains.

Work to clear the 31-mile stretch of buried road started a week ago, but has been hindered by relentless snow. Debris such as rocks and tree branches, caught up in the avalanches and mixed in with the snow, have rendered rotary snowplows useless, and so rescuers have had to resort to shovels and excavators.

Helicopters were sent to evacuate those stranded in Hemu, but as with the clearing work, inclement weather has complicated this, and all. A military helicopter scheduled to send supplies to the village was delayed Tuesday due to blizzards.
