2024 Data Show Svalbard Polar Bears Fatter and More Numerous

Recent data from the Norwegian Polar Institute reveals that male polar bears in Svalbard in 2024 are fatter and more numerous than they were in 1993. Despite a slight decline in sea ice in that time, cub litter sizes have remained high.

Spring surveys indicate that Svalbard's bears have maintained or even improved their body condition since the 1990s. This mirrors the wider trend. In the 1960s, global polar bear populations were estimated at 5,000 to 10,000, with the count today seeing their numbers north of 30,000.

Key Findings Of The Norwegian Polar Institute Report

1)
Male polar bears in 2024 are fatter than in 1993.

2) Polar bear populations in Svalbard are more numerous now compared to 1993.

3) Litter sizes of new cubs remain high.

4) Slightly less sea ice has actually coincided with improved polar bear health.

5) Svalbard sea ice levels have been above average since September 2023.
