Alaska Cold Refuses To Quit
Alaska’s cold spring has now pushed into June.
This week, Kotzebue fell to 27F (-2.8C) with McGrath to 34F (1.1C) - both daily records in books dating back to the early 1940s.
Spring 2026 ran colder than normal across Alaska, including at Anchorage, Kodiak Island, the Aleutians and the Pribilofs. Anchorage averaged 31.5F (-0.3C) for March through May, 5.6F below normal, making for the city’s fourth-coldest spring in books back to 1952. King Salmon was the standout, averaging 24.9F (-3.9C) for the spring period - a full 10.1F below normal.
May just gone held very chilly, with Anchorage posting its latest freeze on record: 32F (0C) on May 24.
And now mid-June is holding cool, too.
Atlantic Hurricane Forecast Cut As Tropical Waters Cool
Colorado State University has cut its 2026 Atlantic hurricane season forecast.
Its earlier April outlook called for 13 named storms, 6 hurricanes, 2 major hurricanes and an ACE index of 90. The June 10 update now calls for 11 named storms, 5 hurricanes, 2 major hurricanes and an ACE index of 70.
That puts the forecast below the multidecadal average.
NOAA is also leaning quiet.
