Aussie Antarctic Stations All Logged Colder-Than-Average Winter; Met Office ‘Finds’ New 2026 Heat Record; New Study: Solar Cycle Modulates The Pacific Ocean; + Spotless Day

The Dalton Minimum did not occur after a long gentle slide into the quiet: a very strong solar cycle, a late burst of intense activity, then two collapsed cycles. The lights just went out.

Aussie Antarctic Stations All Logged Colder-Than-Average Winter

The cold that dominated Antarctica through the 2026 winter was also evident across Australia’s Antarctic network.

Bureau of Meteorology data show Casey, Davis and Mawson all finished winter with below-average temperatures.

Davis posted the largest nighttime departure, averaging -23C (-9.4F) for winter — 2.9C (5.2F) below average. Its mean maximum came in at -15.3C (4.5F), which was 1.7C (3.1F) below average.

Mawson averaged -23.1C (-9.6F) at night, 2.5C (4.5F) below average, while its mean max of -16.1C (3F) ran 1.6C (2.9F) below normal.

At Casey, the winter mean minimum came in at -20C (-4F), 1.3C (2.3F) below average, with daytime maxima averaging -11.9C (10.6F), 1.2C (2.2F) below normal.

The cold was particularly pronounced at Davis, which fell to -36.8C (-34.2F) on July 21.

Casey reached -34.4C (-29.9F), while Mawson dropped to -31C (-23.8F).

All three of Australia’s Antarctic bases finished colder than their long-term averages in both maximum and minimum temperatures.
