Aussies Brace For Icy Weekend

Australians are gearing up for another frigid weekend as rain, wind, and snow sweep in. Melbourne is already experiencing its coldest start to winter in years. While last week, several low-temperature records were shattered across the nation.

Friday morning was particularly chilly in most capital cities.

Sydneysiders woke up to a nippy 7.8C (46F), while Melburnians shivered through their coldest minimum temperatures for the month of June since 2006, with overnight temps averaging 6.6C (43.9F).

Canberra was the country's coldest capital, hitting a freezing -3C (26.6F), a reading among the city's lowest temperatures in years, while Hobart posted a low of 6.4C (43.5F).

Meteorologists warn that temperatures will plunge further as a polar system blows in. This system will start in Western Australia on Friday, move through South Australia and Victoria, and hit New South Wales by Saturday night into Sunday.

Sky News Meteorologist Rob Sharpe predicts a colder weekend: "Fast-forward to tomorrow, you can see that drop in temperatures, and again into NSW on Sunday," he said, adding that some 20 cm (8 inches) of snow is expected for most ski fields.

Misguided Heat Concerns
