Blizzards Hit China
At least 22 stations in China set new December precipitation records over the weekend as a widespread cold wave pushed south and east. In the far north, Mohe’s automated station plunged to -38C (-36F), the coldest reading of the season so far.
Snowfall was disruptive across central provinces. In Luoyang, Henan, heavy snows and biting lows left roads and trees coated in ice, snarling transport and weighing down infrastructure not accustomed to such sustained winter conditions.
Farther west, conditions turned severe.
On the evening of December 13, Dabancheng in Xinjiang was hit by blizzards. The combination of intense cold, loose snow, and extreme winds scoured exposed areas, reduced visibility, and forced road closures as snow was blown completely off surfaces.
Heavy Snow Pounds Turkey
Hard freezes have gripped large parts of Turkey, with eastern and northern provinces blanketed under heavy snow.
Warnings from the Turkish State Meteorological Service proved accurate: widespread snowfall has cut off rural settlements, shut roads, and delivered the first major winter outbreak of the season.
