China's Big Freeze Expands South, Takes More Names
China's record-breaking Arctic Outbreak (-52.3C/-62.1F) is descending further south, delivering a steep temperature drop and heavy snow to central and eastern provinces.
The National Meteorological Center (NMC) said that Sunday saw strong winds, widespread sandstorms, dramatic temperature drops and powerful snowstorms hit the north, with these conditions expected to drop south and east as the week progresses.
On Monday, the NMC renewed and expanded its orange alert for a cold wave.
At 18:00, the center issued warnings for strong winds, strong convection, sandstorms, cold waves, heavy snow, and thick fog, in what has been confirmed as the highest-ever number of warnings issued since China established its 'disaster warning system'.
Northern China is set to suffer the worst of Tuesday's snowfall, with the likes of Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang, Xizang, Qinghai, the Yellow River, Yangtze River/Huaihe River basins, and the Jianghan plain all forecast severe disruptions.
The cold and snow will then continue south on Wednesday, reports chinadaily.com, with central provinces such as Shandong, Henan, Jiangsu, Anhui and Hubei battered by heavy snowfall or even blizzards for the remainder of the week.

In light of the severe weather conditions, many primary and secondary schools will postpone the start of the new semester by one week to next Monday to ensure the safety of students, including in in Wuhan, Hubei province.
On Monday, China entered "Rain Water", also known as "Yu Shui" — the second solar term in the traditional Chinese lunar calendar. The term heralds an increase in precipitation and a rise in temperatures. However, the NMC has warned that below-average temperatures are expected to persist into March.
Snow in the north has been quite exceptional.
Drone footage captured by a local herder shows a pack of wolves forming tunnels through Xinjiang's record-breaking powder.
The leading wolf is burrowing through the 1+ meter (3.3 ft) high snow with the smaller juvenile wolves following. The pack leader is seen bringing up the rear of the group.
Wildlife officials say the recent heavy snow and record cold has created great difficulties for foraging animals.
Snow As "High As Horses" Hits Kyrgyzstan
Looking East, and as occurred in mid-December, the Central Asian nation of Kyrgyzstan is again reporting feet upon feet of fresh snow.
Snowfall exceeding 1.3m (4.3ft) has blanketed the Kara-Kulja district of Osh region, south-western Kyrgyzstan.
As reported by akipress.com, ‘the snowfall reached the height of horses’.
