Cold Shot Hits Eastern China

Eastern China has been hit by a sharp late-April cold shot.

Shanghai, normally pushing deeper into spring warmth by now, managed a daytime high of just 11.7C (53.1F) on April 29, which made for the city’s coldest April daytime max since 1939.

The same broader cold pattern also reached southwest China.

In Yunnan, authorities warned the province of falling temperatures, rain, thunderstorms, strong winds, hail, and local drops of more than 10C this week.

By the early hours of April 29, the northern mountainous areas around Kunming and Qujing were documenting heavy snow, a rare sight with May on the doorstep.
