Cyprus At Record Electricity Demand

The cold gripping Cyprus drove electricity demand to record-highs Monday night. With temperatures plummeting—as reported on yesterday—the grid is buckling, prompting calls for urgent government intervention to prevent outages.

Chara Kousiappa of Transmission System Operator said that demand approached maximum capacity Monday night, hitting 1,108MW at times. Two units at Vasiliko were pushed beyond their limits to meet the surge, she explained.

Last night's peak surpassed the previous winter record of 1,066MW set January 2022.


Northern Hemisphere Snow Mass Well-Above Average

Continuing the trend of recent years, Northern Hemisphere snow mass is peaking well-above the 1982-2012 average.

According to the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI), this season's mass (excluding the mountains) has been reading approx. 3,000 gigatons for the past few days. This is some 250 gigatons above the average, a full standard deviation above:
