Deep Cold Locks In Over Greenland
The Arctic’s cold core has tightened dramatically.
At Summit Station, Greenland temperatures plunged to -60.4C (-76.7F) during the early hours of Feb 24, the lowest reading of the season anywhere in the Northern Hemisphere, besting the previous seasonal low of -59C (-74.2F) set in Delyankir, Russia.
All eyes remain on Greenland, with record cold possible as the week progresses.
The DMI is forecasting surface temperatures of -67C (-88.5F) which would approach the coldest temperature ever recorded in the Northern Hemisphere — currently the -93.3F (-69.6C) set on Dec 21, 1991 (during the aftermath of the Pinatubo eruption).
Across nearby Nunavut, temperatures dropped below -40C (-40F) on Monday as blizzard conditions swept multiple communities. Strong winds pushed wind chills to -65C (-85F), including at Taloyoak, where exposure became dangerous within minutes.
Farther west, Eureka tanked to -50.4C (-58.7F) — the first -50C reading of the season in Canada.

Newfoundland Nears February Snow Record
A winter storm has hammered Newfoundland/
Paradise recorded 79.5 cm (31.3 in) of snow, with widespread totals of 60–70 cm (24–28 in) across the eastern Avalon Peninsula. St. John’s East measured 55.6 cm (21.9 in), while nearby Ferryland reached 70 cm (27.6 in).
The storm followed closely on the heels of an earlier major system, compounding impacts and leaving little time for recovery. Many areas have now received more than 100 cm (39.4 in) of snow in under a week.
Snowfall in St. John’s has surged to 165.2 cm (65 in) this month, putting the city within just 5 cm (2 in) of its snowiest February on record (170.1 cm from 2006) and closing fast on its snowiest calendar month ever (173.4 cm from Dec 2000) — in record books dating back to the late 1800s, with continuous data since the 1940s.
