Early Season Snow In Ukraine

The Ukrainian highlands, specifically the Ivano-Frankivsk region of the Carpathian Mountains, have experienced early snowfall this week with 5 inches falling, so reads a Ukrhydrometeorological Center report.

Octobober snow in the Carpathian Mountains, particularly Ivano-Frankivsk, is considered rare. While flakes do typically begin falling around this time of year, snow of this magnitude—13 cm (5 inches)—is usually reserved for late-October/November.

Temperatures have also surprised, with lows of -3C (26.6F) recorded.

Due to these worsening conditions, the State Emergency Service of Ukraine has advised people to postpone hiking trips in the Carpathians. Despite constant patrols by rescuers, venturing into the mountains poses significant risks.

"Please refrain from traveling to the highlands during this period of adverse weather conditions," the service warned, adding that a fresh storm warning is currently in effect with more snow expected.

Cold Antarctica

The cold anomalies have most-certainly returned to Antarctica.

Following the colder-than-average September, a low of -72.5C (-98.5F) was registered at Vostok on October 2 — among the coldest October temperatures ever recorded at the Russian base (data to 1958), though a ways off the -79.4C (-111F) set on Oct 1, 2021.
