Early Snow Blankets California And Utah; South Africans Told To "Brace For The Big Freeze"; + The Logarithmic Nature of CO2
The diminishing returns of CO2 are widely understood, though rarely relayed to the public.
Early Snow Blankets California And Utah
California and Utah have experienced early-season snowfalls, with more expected by the weekend.
The NWS had issued its earliest snow advisory in 20 years for the Sierra Nevada, forecasting flakes at elevations above 8,000 feet.
Indeed, the cold front delivered some 5 inches to areas such as Tuolumne Meadows, Yosemite, and higher terrain in Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks on Monday, with travelers advised to prepare for difficult road conditions.
Temperatures in these parts sank to 20 degrees below normal, particularly across Central California.
In Utah, webcams at Alta Ski Area and Snowbird captured the season’s first snowfall, with accumulations noted on Mount Timpanogos. The snow line remained at about 9,000 feet, also impacting resorts such as Eagle Point in the south of the state.
Though the snow cover is thin, more is expected in the coming days, with Alta forecast a foot by the weekend. Historically, Utah’s mountains receive about 2.7 inches of snow in September.
Early snowfalls don’t necessarily indicate a bumper winter ahead — but the looming La Niña might. Utah's last La Niña winter delivered all-time record-smashing snow to the state. I see the potential for a repeat; however, official forecasts are calling for below-normal snow this winter (as they always do).
