European Peaks White

Heavy snow buried the Italian province of Cuneo on December 16.

Accumulations topped 50 cm (20 inches) at Prato Nevoso ski resort:


With disruptive totals settling below 500 meters (1,600 feet):


Cars were trapped in parking lots as residents and tourists spent the morning shoveling deep drifts.

Turning west to Spain, the mountains are receiving healthy totals there as well.

The city of Granada sits beneath a snow-covered Sierra Nevada:

Mount Teide dressed in fresh snow.


While looking ahead, Europe (and in particular Russia) could be on for truly brutal freezes over the Christmas period.

Latest ECMWF guidance for Dec 23–28 drives temperature anomalies sharply negative (below). Parts of Siberia push beyond the standard color scale, with the large pink core signaling around 30F below late-December norms — and potentially colder:
