The exceptional cold spell over Greenland persists.
Summit just posted a low of -65.3C (-85.5F), 2C shy of the station’s February record, with wind chills tanking to -91.5C (-132.7F).
The Klinck AWS is officially recognized as Greenland’s all-time record holder, with -69.6C (-93.3F) measured on 22 Dec 1991 (the lowest near-surface air temperature ever recorded in the Northern Hemisphere). But the station is no longer active.
Confusion continues to circulate online as some commentators conflate temperature records from different facilities. Older Danish-era stations (Klinck) and the current U.S.-operated camps (Summit) are often mixed together.
Regardless, Greenland’s high interior is approaching historic benchmarks.
The DMI hints there could be colder to come.
Meanwhile, at the bottom of the world, Antarctica is sliding into its winter phase.
