Greenland's Above-Average Start To The Season

Greenland’s ice sheet is showing robust early-season growth, with surface mass balance (SMB) gains above the norm.

The latest data from the Danish Meteorological Institute (via Polar Portal) shows Greenland's SMB for 2024-2025 is tracking above the 1981-2010 average, reflecting a continuation of recent years’ trend toward increased seasonal accumulation.

The cumulative SMB for this season (below — blue line in the bottom panel) is tracking above the average, signaling, so far at least, another year of strong growth.

La Niña Winter Inbound, Say NOAA

A La Niña winter is on the way, writes NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center in their latest report released Thursday — it's due by December and should persistence through early 2025.
