Greenland’s Record April SMB Gains

Greenland’s surface mass balance (SMB) has spiked sharply in recent days, with April 27 taking the biscuit — around 8 gigatons accumulated on Monday, well above the 1981–2010 average for late April.

Daily accumulation has repeatedly pushed into the upper range since mid-month:

The 2025–26 season is now tracking slightly above the long-term mean:

Late-April is when the ice sheet typically transitions toward melt dominance. Strong accumulation at this stage builds a buffer—more snowpack to absorb early melt and delay exposure of darker underlying ice.

Late-April Snow Breaks Records In Moscow

Winter made an unseasonal return to Moscow on Monday, with around 12 cm (4.7 in) of snow falling across the capital — the heaviest snowfall ever recorded for this date.

Russian meteorologist Yevgeny Tishkovets (Phobos Weather Center): “Never in the entire history of meteorological observation [~150 years] has there been this much snow on April 27.”

Ventusky calls the totals "exceptional for the end of April" and notes 20+cm (8 in) in the surrounding areas.
