Heavy Spring Snowfall Hits New Zealand

Unseasonable spring snow has caused widespread disruptions across New Zealand's South Island, with State Highway 6 among the hardest hit.

After significant work, contractors managed to reopen a portion the Highway near Murchison on Sunday evening, although traffic remains slow. "The road is open to two lanes, but under a temporary speed limit," stated the New Zealand Transport Agency.

The heavy spring snows not only closed roads but also stranded numerous travelers. A bus carrying 26 passengers slid off a snowy road en route to Mt. Cook Village on Saturday, though fortunately, no injuries were reported.

MetService meteorologist Lewis Ferris explained that, although late-October snowfall is not unheard of, the scale of this year's event has been unusual, which he attributes to a convergence of low-pressure systems pulling up cold air from Antarctica.

Eastern Russia Buried

As recently reported by RT, the city of Magadan in eastern Russia has been hit by a heavy snowstorm, resulting in major disruptions with vehicles, emergency responders, and even snowplows becoming immobilized.
