Mumbai Coldest May Temp Since 1985
Mumbai woke to a rare chill on Wednesday with thermometers reading just just 20.6C (69F) — the city's coldest May morning in four decades. The last time it got this cold in May was in 1985, when the mercury touched 20.2C (68F).
This unseasonal cool spell has been triggered by a western disturbance —a weather system more typical of winter— which brought thunderstorms, cloud cover, and widespread rain across the region.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai and nearby districts, warning of further thunderstorms, gusty winds, lightning, and localized rainfall through May 10.
The cooler-than-average conditions —about 3C below seasonal norms— are expected to hold for the foreseeable.
The unusual shift was caused by a system that formed over Pakistan and moved into western India, dragging cool air and moisture down the Konkan coast — locals consider it a rare but welcome break from Mumbai’s usual May heat.
