NASA's Lesotho Snow Images
An unusual late-spring snowstorm blanketed Lesotho and parts of South Africa last week, one driven by a rare low-pressure system from the Southern Ocean, taking a path not commonly seen in past snowfall patterns.
The cold front shut down a major highway between Durban and Johannesburg, killed at least two people, and dumped several feet of snow on Lesotho’s ski resort.
A storm of this extent, dropping the depth of snow it did in late spring, is highly unusual, writes NASA, who captured this false color image using the Terra satellite:
Looking ahead, a rinse and repeat is expected this week, into October—an even rarer feat.
