NASA's Lesotho Snow Images

An unusual late-spring snowstorm blanketed Lesotho and parts of South Africa last week, one driven by a rare low-pressure system from the Southern Ocean, taking a path not commonly seen in past snowfall patterns.

The cold front shut down a major highway between Durban and Johannesburg, killed at least two people, and dumped several feet of snow on Lesotho’s ski resort.

A storm of this extent, dropping the depth of snow it did in late spring, is highly unusual, writes NASA, who captured this false color image using the Terra satellite:

Snow and ice are shown in blue, with clouds in white.

Looking ahead, a rinse and repeat is expected this week, into October—an even rarer feat.
