Record May Freeze Deepens Across SE Europe

After Athens logged its coldest May Day on record, the cold pushed deeper overnight into May 4, with historic May lows across Greece and the wider Balkans.

Several stations set or neared May records, including freezing readings at relatively modest elevations.

The standout came from Tripoli Airport in central Peloponnese, Greece. Sitting at around 650 m (2,133 ft), the station fell to -1.2C (29.8F), its lowest May temperature ever recorded. Around Tripolis, readings dropped as low as -2C (28.4F), a record-setting value for May in southern Greece.

A host of Greek stations broke monthly records on May 4: Florina fell to -1.5C (29.3F), Kastoria to -1.4C (29.5F), Lamia to 2.8C (37F), Serres to 2.9C (37.2F), and Zakynthos to 5.8C (42.4F).

The cold was not confined to Greece.
