Lapland woke to early-season snow Tuesday morning, with Kilpisjärvi in Enontekiö receiving 3 cm (1.2 inches) — Lapland's first snowfall typically occurs in October.

According to the Finnish Meteorological Institute’s criteria, for flakes to be officially recognized as the 'first snow,' there must be at least one centimeter measured on the ground at a weather station by 9 AM. Kilpisjärvi comfortably met this threshold.

Other areas in the northwest of Finnish Lapland experienced heavy sleet, adding to winter's early arrival.

Another Polar Blast To Slam Southern Africa

South Africa's recent cold and snow looks to be just a taster of what's to come.

Latest GFS runs foresee a large mass of Antarctic air engulfing ALL of the country later this week, with the cold extending unusually-far north into the likes of Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Namibia, even into Zambia and Angola.
