Snow Returns To Scotland And Wider Europe

Severe winter weather is returning to the UK, with Scotland the first to feel the brunt.

With heavy snow and plunging temperatures creating hazardous conditions across the country, the Met Office has issued multiple warnings, including another 'amber' alert for snow and ice, set to remain in place until at least Thursday.

Treacherous driving conditions have been reported across the country, with trucks sliding off roads and cars overturning.

A cold front, driven by Storm Bert, is responsible for snow, icy patches and strong wind gusts of up to 75 mph. Forecaster Honor Criswick warned, "Snow will persist across higher ground, with flurries potentially reaching as far south as the Pennines."

Temperatures of -7C (19.4F) have already been endured, with colder conditions expected as the week progresses.

Turning to the UK more broadly, and to mainland Europe, December looks on course to be cold and historically snowy:

Global Temperature Tumbles

As expected, due to 1) reducing solar activity, 2) a fading El Niño, and 3) the waning after-effects of Hunga Tonga, global temperatures are tumbling, down 0.09C in a month, and now a ways off the April 2024 peak:
