Snow and Sub-Zero Lows Sweep Europe

Following Europe's damaging freeze and rare snows of late-April, the month of May has seen conditions deteriorate further.

Tanking temperatures have triggered snowfall and hard frosts across dozens of countries. Arctic air is firmly in charge, resulting in rare and severe bouts of cold for the time of year.

On May 6, temperatures dropped well-below freezing in many areas...

Altnaharra in the UK recorded -4.7C (23.5F). In Belarus, Minsk reached -3.8C (25.2F), while multiple cities in Lithuania and Poland hit -3.2C (26.2F). Dublin, Ireland dropped to -0.6C (30.9F), and León, Spain registered exactly 0C (32F).

Scandinavia was colder, as you might expect. Kilpisjarvi Saana in Finland bottomed-out at -9.4C (15.1F), and Katterjakk in Sweden reached -8.9C (16.0F). These are extreme readings for May, lows that are expected to hit emerging crops hard.

The damage is still being assessed, but the frosts that hit Ukraine--for example--in late-April were among the worst ever recorded:
