South African Snowstorm Turns Deadly
Following the rare and severe snowstorm that hit South Africa over the weekend, rescue efforts continued along the N3 Toll Route through Monday.
Snowdrifts up to two meters (6.6 feet) stranded motorists for multiple nights, especially between KwaZulu-Natal and the Free State, with emergency teams have been working non-stop to clear roads and assist those trapped.
KZN acting Premier Thembeni Madlopha-Mthethwa said at least two people died from hypothermia. Some, as of Monday, still remain trapped. NGOs like the Red Cross and Al Imdaad Foundation are providing food and water to stranded, while helicopters are on working to deliver supplies and evacuate those in the worst-hit areas.
A 30-kilometer stretch of the N3 near Tugela Plaza remains closed, with efforts hindered by abandoned vehicles.
Weather conditions are forecast to improve, with no further snow expected. Cold temperatures will persist however, and authorities have kept warnings in place urging residents to stay safe and avoid unnecessary travel.
