South Plains-Panhandle Sees Record Snow
On Sunday, 16-hours of continuous snowfall led to more than a foot accumulating in parts of the South Plains-Panhandle.
Breaking a daily snow record for Feb 11, Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport received 3.6 inches, surpassing the previous benchmark of 2.1 inches from 2010.
The Amarillo area saw upwards of 6 inches Sunday, according NWS office in Lubbock, while residents of Plainview and Hale Center picked up 14 inches.
Another drop in temperature is expected over the weekend bringing the chance of further flakes, as that polar front we've been discussing sweeps much of the CONUS:
Cape Breton Still Snow Clearing As Round 2 Nears
About a week after Atlantic Canada received an all-time, recording-busting burial of snow, the likes of Cape Breton, N.B. are still digging out--and at the same time are bracing for another winter storm due to roll in Valentines Day.
The great snow storms of the recent past were eclipsed by this one, including ‘White Juan’ (2004) and the ‘Blizzard of 92’.
The mayor of Cape Breton's largest municipality says she wept when a snowplow rumbled down her street in Sydney, N.S., where she had been trapped with her family for days.
"My three-year-old ... was so excited," said Amanda McDougall. "It was palpable in the air how happy we all were."
With the new storm fast-approaching, authorities have allowed the dumping of snow into the Sydney harbor to assist the clearing efforts:
The forecast calls for this area to be hit again, this week.
Adverse winter weather conditions will impact swaths of eastern Canada through Feb 16. A 'Red Winter Storm' warning is in place for the majority of Nova Scotia, with as much as a foot of snow expected for counties along the Atlantic coast.
Looking out west, the setup is turning colder across the likes of British Columbia.
Biting lows and heavy snows is on the cards here, particularly for western portions of the province, conditions that will recall the fierce Arctic air mass that dropped in last month, impacting growers.
The B.C. Cherry Association (BCCA) issued a press release Monday, blaming a mild start to the winter followed by "a “sudden and unseasonably-cold polar vortex” in January for a "dramatically" reduced cherry crop.
"This is the most challenging season our growers have seen in our lifetime," said BCCA president Sukhpaul Bal. "It is [also] possible that trees in the worst hit areas have suffered long-lasting damage with a recovery that could take years," he added.
The swings between extremes claims another victim.
