Spring Storm Brings Snow Boost To Sierra Nevada

A late-season storm is moving into the Sierra Nevada, bringing a much-needed deluge of snow.

Initially, the snowline holds high through Friday, limiting early accumulation. But then a colder system follows on Saturday, dropping snow to lake level by the evening.

Multiple inches are expected at lake level, with as much as 2 feet (61 cm) forecast across higher terrain by Sunday. The highest peaks could far exceed that.

A Winter Storm Watch is in effect from 5 PM Friday to 10 PM Sunday for elevations above 4,500 feet. “Mountain travel may be very difficult to impossible,” warn the NWS.

And there may be more to come soon after.

Early runs point to below-average temperatures and continued precipitation into the final week of April, keeping the window open for additional snow.

There is a deficit across the Sierra this year.

But winter is not done yet.

And it’s a similar story for much of the West:

Canada Buried By Snow

While the Western U.S. has struggled somewhat this season, large swaths of Canada have been buried.

In the west, Banff Sunshine Village has pushed past 800 cm (315 in), boosted by a 208 cm (82 in) month of March that behaved more like mid-winter than spring.
