UK Weather Data Is Broken

Following on from yesterday's article, 77.9% of the Met Office’s weather stations have a known error margin of up to 2C or worse. Nearly a third of them can be off by up to 5C. Yet somehow, this same agency feels confident declaring temperature records down to 0.01C.

The Met Office runs 380 temperature stations across the UK. Only 13.7% fall into Class 1 or 2 — the only categories considered scientifically reliable by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). These are the sites that don’t sit next to buildings, tarmac, or tropical greenhouses. The likes of Heathrow, St James’s Park, and Northolt—those regularly making the news—are Class 4 or 5.
