Winter Returns To North America

More than half of the United States will feel the chill Monday as Arctic air plunges south from Canada.

It's the east's turn to freeze, and what a divide (graphic courtesy of Fox Weather):

This graphic shows warm air out West while the East deals with below average temperatures and snow.

Spring officially arrives Tuesday, but some 23 million Americans, from Arkansas to North Carolina, are under Freeze watches and warnings, including in cities such as Little Rock, Memphis, Birmingham, Montgomery, Atlanta and Charlotte.

Below average temperatures will affect some 183 million on Tuesday:

"Vegetation in these regions is susceptible to frost/freeze damage," warned the WPC.

Snowfall will accompany the cold, including lake-effect snow.

Travel from the Great Lakes to the Northeast as well as portions of the central Appalachians will be disrupted, with heavy lake-effect snow forecast to hit Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and the Tug Hill Plateau in central New York.

Heavy snow has been battering the West in recent weeks, including across California and Utah, and most recently in Colorado:

America endured a colder-than-average February, despite the press releases. And for the year to date, the country has set 197 all-time low temperature records (NOAA).

Additional record lows are expected during the incoming Arctic Outbreak:

Biting lows and heavy spring snows are on the way to Canada, and all.

Speaking to Alberta, a double-digit temperature swing will rip across the province through the middle of the week. "Winter's Revenge" is what the Weather Network are calling it, who have issued warnings for "frigid temps" and a "multi-day snow event".

The network provides the below graphic depicting "Arctic Air forcing south":

The polar front will enter northern and eastern Alberta Tuesday.

Edmonton will go from 15C (59F) on Monday to 2C )35.6F) on Tuesday, then the night will bring freezing lows where thermometers are expected stay through next weekend. Likewise in Calgary, -5C (23F) will be the daily high Wednesday, with heavy snow to boot: "a long-duration upsloping snow event for much of central and southern Alberta," say the Weather Network.

Some areas could see substantial snowfall totals (of more than a foot) with major travel impact.

The Afif desert, west of Riyadh, has witnessed a surprise dusting of snow.
